Studies Establish the Effectiveness of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Chemotherapy Induced Nausea As discussed by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, "the positive effect of acupuncture on... chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (N/V) is convincing, as demonstrated by the consistency of the results of a variety of clinical study types, including randomized clinical trials (RCTs), nonrandomized trials, prospective consecutive case series, and retrospective studies." National Cancer Institute In one study reported by the Institute, researchers concluded "Acupressure at the P6 point is a value-added technique in addition to pharmaceutical management for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer to reduce the amount and intensity of delayed CINV (chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting)" Acupressure for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: a randomized clinical trial.Acupressure for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: a randomized clinical trial. Another study determined that "96.3% of [study participants] had significant reduction in both nausea grade and episodes of vomiting after electroacupuncture." Choo SP, Kong KH, Lim WT, Gao F, Chua K, Leong SS, Electroacupuncture for refractory acute emesis caused by chemotherapy.J Altern Complement Med. 2006 Dec;12(10):963-9. Studies Regarding Chemotherapy are Consistent with those concerning other Conditions. The Institute further noted that results regarding chemotherapy related acupuncture studies are consistent with studies showing the benefits of acupuncture for nausea induced by other factors. It states "[c]onsistent with the findings from clinical studies of acupuncture on N/V due to other causes such as postoperative N/V and morning sickness, these studies showed acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced N/V."
